Obituary of Donald Joseph O'Meara
Donald “Don” Joseph O’Meara, 86, of Clifton Park, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, February 1, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Don was born on June 4, 1938, in Manhattan, to the late Francis and Agnes (Hyland) O’Meara, the youngest of 4 siblings. Raised in New York City, Don’s roots were firmly planted in the vibrant, fast-paced life of the city. He briefly served his country in the United States Army, receiving an honorable discharge in 1964. He immediately went on to serve as one of New York’s Finest with a law enforcement career that spanned over two decades with the NYPD. His sense of duty and commitment to service didn’t end there. After retiring from the NYC police force, he utilized his police expertise into careers at RPI in Troy and St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany. He also tried his hand at entrepreneurship, becoming a franchisee of the Minuteman Press in Albany, NY.
He was especially proud of his family. In 1968, Don married the love of his life, Elizabeth “Betty” O’Meara (Cook). Their marriage was the foundation of a wonderful family, with Don becoming the devoted father to six beautiful daughters. He was the quintessential “Girl Dad” to Kathleen Riordan (husband Mick), Kerry Gutierrez (husband Lain), Kelly DiCocco (husband Tim), Kimberly O’Meara (husband Robert Choquette), Kara Rosettie (husband Eric) and Krissy Morse (husband Ryan); Cherished grandfather of Madeline, Michael, Meghan and Conor Riordan, Emme and Jack Gutierrez, Lauren, Abby and Ainsley DiCocco, Cathryn and Jacob Lapierre, Aidan, Evan and Noah Rosettie, Addison, Meara and Rory Morse. His pride in his children—and later, his 16 grandchildren—was evident to anyone who knew him. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, all of whom he held dear. He was predeceased by his siblings, Margaret O’Rourke, Gloria O’Meara, and Gerard O’Meara.
Don was a man of many passions. He was an avid sports fan, especially when it came to his beloved NY Yankees and Giants. His enthusiasm for baseball and football was matched only by his love for golf, even if the game didn’t always love him back. A true New Yorker at heart, Don had an encyclopedic knowledge of NYC’s history, culture, and trivia, which he loved to share, often with a witty one-liner that left everyone laughing. His sense of humor was legendary, and those who knew Don will always remember his quick wit and infectious laughter. He was a proud and lifelong Republican, always standing firm in his beliefs, and was a faithful communicant of St. Edward the Confessor Church in Clifton Park.
Don’s legacy lives on through his family, who will forever carry the lessons, humor, and love he shared with them. While Don’s passing leaves a hole in the hearts of all who knew him, his memory will live on in the stories we share, the laughter he left behind, and the family he so lovingly nurtured.
Funeral will be held on Friday Feb. 7th, at 11:30 am in St. Edward the Confessor Church, 569 Clifton Park Center Road, Clifton Park, NY 12065 where the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated.
