Irene, Amy, Shawn and Megan,
Donna and I were both saddened to hear of Danny's passing. Danny was a very kind person who had a quiet strength about him who I know will be sorely missed. He was a true gentleman who I remember coming to many of Shawn's athletic events and quietly watching from a distance. He was a very good man with a truly generous soul.

I sold Dan a Cadillac years ago at OTTO Olds-Cadillac. I must say that Dan was nothing but a complete gentleman and treated me great. He was a very nice guy and I truly enjoyed doing business with him.
He called me after the sale to say he could not set his garage door opener. I ran up to his house and set up the remote for him. Very appreciative and he even tipped which rarely happened in the car business.

First & foremost I send my sincerest condolences to Danny's wife, children, & family. May Always keeping in mind the good memories, as well as knowing that Danny is now Finally Resting with God in heaven, bring you at least a bit of comfort.
Speaking of good memories with Danny, I have Over three decades of those! I began work at age 18 (& retired 'the second' I turned 55), & attended my first union mtg one month later. By the following spring I was Involved w/ my union both at my work & as a Convention Delegate, & by the time of either the following or the next Syr State Local #013 elections I was an officer (2nd VP, & then later on 1st VP), for a total of Over three Decades! I first met Danny briefly at the union clambake the month I began working, but we met moreso when I first became a Delegate; during that time he called me 'Kid'. By the time I was 2nd VP, Danny 'promoted me' to 'Trouble', LOL! And, by the time I was 1st VP, he 'promoted me' to 'Boss'! All terms were Perfectly Fitting, as I Always Fought Fiercely for the Benefit of My Members, which were those of Syr Local #013 in particular...However, sometimes (actually as time went on, more often than not) my 'perspective' Greatly Differed from that of Some union officers/ leaders (in particular, those that were equally fierce fighters)! BUT, w/ that said, I always Admired Danny for Never Being Nasty to me like a few of the others were when they disagreed w/ my position! Unlike those few, Danny was Intelligent enough to Understand my positions, & thus, he Knew that on Every Issue Except One (also maybe excluding some political endorsements) We Both Had Same End Goals...just maybe differed on How To Achieve Them! Anyway, so Danny was Always Cordial/ Friendly to me, & would even welcome/ greet me before I to him when we'd meet up at any event (& it definitely was a pleasure hanging w/ him after the 'serious biz' was done)! Since I retired 9 1/2 yrs ago, I've crossed paths w/ Danny a couple of times at concerts, & in those dark venues, He Spotted Me First...and Made Special Effort to Come Over to Greet Me & ask how I'm doing in retirement, etc, when he could have Easily passed me right by & I would not have even known he was there! These type of Actions are what Endeared All To Danny Donohue...and thus, made him a Great Union Leader & Person that Will Never Be Forgotten!

Irene and family,
Danny was my best friend on the AFSCME International Executive Board. We sat next to each other. A young IVP from WA State was excited to sit next to an IVP from the big state of NY. We bonded on our first meeting. Danny knew union politics and I knew public policy. A useful alliance. Many wonderful times at International Executive Board meetings, dinners, and international foreign affairs trips.
I'm looking now at the Matryoshka (Ugh, otherwise know as Russian) stacking dolls Danny bought for me to take home to my wife, who he knew, when we were on a side trip to Estonia after a Public Service International convention in Helsinki after the fall of the Soviet Union.
The most memorable times were at the Phoenix Inn in Washington DC when Danny pointed out IRA gun runners soliciting funds and then being joined one memorable night with Boston union leaders, Ted Kennedy and Tip O'Neill. What a friend!

Danny and I first met in the early 70's at the Central Islip Psychiatric Center when he had just become Pres. of the CSEA unit and I was a new CSEA Field Rep . Over the next 50 yrs. plus he never changed. Whether dining with Presidents, Governors, or just CSEA members, Danny was always humble, thoughtful and caring. His sole mission was to help as many people as possible in both CSEA, AFSCME and those in the labor movement. My fondest memory was our "meet the President of CSEA" trips throughout NY State. He so enjoyed getting out of his office and meeting members which was his calling for his entire union career. Danny will be sorely missed by not only his family, close friends, but by all the thousands he met and helped. Rest in peace my dear friend you surely earned it and deserve some "time off".

Danny was my boss, mentor and friend for more than 32 years of professional life that was more than just a job. Danny was always on a mission to advance the interest of CSEA members and other working people with fairness and build a better New York and America.
We first met standing on line to check in at the old Concord Hotel in the Catskills in 1985 and became fast friends. It wasn’t unique because he was always making friends and it was a hallmark of his leadership style.
I have thousands of stories from years of travel, battles won and lost and experiences with all kinds of people in every part of New York. Grateful for Danny’s guidance, confidence and inspiration, along with the opportunity to help.

I knew Danny for 50 years and you could not find a more sincere, dedicated and hard working Union activist. Through his years as Executive Vice President and President, Danny led CSEA to be the highly respected and powerful union that it is today. He was an excellent negotiator and even during tough times, maintained a cordial approach that often resulted in success for CSEA. As an Arbitrator for 43 of those same years, I watched Danny protect his members while always respecting the process. I join with all of us in the labor relations community in saying that his contributions were immense and impactful. Personally, I enjoyed my conversations with Danny, who never forgot where he came from and although a major player in the national Union stage, he was a "regular guy." I remain appreciative of the confidence he placed in me to provide arbitration and labor relations services to CSEA. My condolences to his family and all who feel his loss. May he rest in peace.

As a former Organizer/Organizing Director under Danny
Danny paved the way for us to Organize THOUSANDS of home based childcare providers into CSEA. The law at the time said they couldnt join a Union. With Dannys leadership and tenacity we changed that.

I started working at CSEA in 2004, after working for 14 years as a Business Representative for SEIU. I was hired as a Labor Education Specialist, training CSEA members to be Shop Stewards, Grievance Reps, and how to investigate and prepare for arbitrations. This was the best damn job I ever had. Every time a staff member saw Danny, he always greeted us with, “Hi Boss”. He always had a smile on his face and never made you feel intimidated being in his presence. He will be missed. I’m just happy that he enjoyed retirement that he totally earned. Rest in peace Danny. I’m sure you and Gourdy are on a golf course having a great time. Patty McArdle

I am very proud to say I was a good close friend of my mentor Danny.
As one of the Region Presidents, I spent a lot of time at CSEA meetings and I always admired his whit and conduct when chairing a convention, a meeting or talking to members!

From the time he called me "kid", he had me. Little did I know, he called every newbie 'kid'. It was his way. His very own 'Rico Suave' move that sent the message you were part of something bigger. Danny, I recall meeting you in Brooklyn during a rally. You pulled me to the side and whispered to me " young lady you are a trouble maker" only because my fighting spirit to keep my health facility from closing. RIP Danny may your fighting spirit continue to live on!

Danny and I worked together on many pieces of legislation . I was the Executive Vice President of NYSUT. One of the most important pieces that we put together was the Cost of Living adjustment that every retiree receives. We served together on the State AFL- CIO and had many laughs together as we met on our joint issues. About a month ago we bumped into each other at a medical office and talked about getting together for lunch, which unfortunately will not happen now.
Danny worked all hours and all over the State. He was a great leader in his Union.
