Obituary of Mary Monica Lonergan Miller
Mary Monica Lonergan Miller, 90, passed away on November 19, 2025, surrounded by her family.
Born on May 8, 1935, in County Waterford, Ireland, Mary was one of nine children and carried her Irish heritage with pride throughout her life.
At just 17 years old, with remarkable courage and determination, Mary immigrated to the United States in 1954 through Ellis Island—beginning the journey that would shape the rest of her life in America. Her name remains on the Ellis Island Museum’s immigrant plaque, but her truest legacy is found in the countless friendships she made over the decades. Mary had an extraordinary way of connecting with people—neighbors, coworkers, cashiers, acquaintances who became family. If someone needed kindness, company, or encouragement, she was there. Caring for others was not something she learned; it was simply who she was.
Upon settling in New York City, Mary worked wherever she could find an opportunity, including at the Horn & Hardart Automat and the A&P grocery stores. Her work ethic was steady and strong from the start. While visiting family and friends in the Catskills, she met the love of her life, John F. Miller. They were married on October 5, 1957, in New York City and shared 65 years together. Their life took them across the United States as John served as a radar technician for the U.S. military, and everywhere they lived, Mary formed new friendships that lasted a lifetime.
Mary later became an American citizen in Asheville, North Carolina—an achievement she cherished. As an immigrant, she was deeply proud to be an American and always grateful for the opportunities she found here. After settling in New Windsor, NY, she raised her two daughters and continued to build a home rooted in love, warmth, and community.
In 1980, Mary moved to Clifton Park, NY, where she worked for the Shenendehowa School District. She also became an active member of the Women’s Auxiliary at American Legion Mohawk Post 1450 and volunteered regularly at events that supported local veterans. For more than 40 years, she was a devoted parishioner at St. Edward the Confessor Church.
Mary had the unmistakable charm of an Irish storyteller and the “gift of gab” that could brighten any room. Her Irish brogue, her humor, and her ability to make anyone feel at ease became her signature. She shared stories—sometimes true, sometimes embellished for effect—but always with warmth, laughter, and a sense of connection. If someone showed her kindness, she often told them, “The world needs more people like you,” a phrase that reflected exactly how she lived her own life.
Mary is survived by her daughters Mary Murphy of Clifton Park, NY, and Alice Miller of Daytona, FL; her son-in-law Thomas Murphy; her sister Hannah Byrne of Peekskill, NY; her brother Billy Lonergan of Ireland; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and friends across the United States and Ireland. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, John F. Miller, and her siblings who passed before her.
Mary’s family finds comfort in knowing that she is now reunited with John, the love of her life. Her kindness, her humor, her stories, and her extraordinary ability to make others feel loved will be carried forward by all who knew her. She will be missed deeply and remembered always.
