We were on a class trip far from home. I got sick and was admitted to the local hospital. The day was over, the students boarded the buses and the trip back home was on schedule. Louise wouldn't leave me. Everyone left except Louise and me. No worries. When we were ready to leave Michael was right there... our knight came to our rescue.

Michael, I had a plan for vacation this year. I planned to spend some quiet time holding your hand and saying all the "thank yous" that we never seem to get-to when schedules are tight and the reality is that life is passing us by. I had planned to thank you for accepting me, that very first time we met--a quiet "Michael-like" acceptance--a nod, wink, toast and that great smile. To thank you for 13 years of traveling to births, Baptisms, birthday parties in strange kid places where you could not even wear your shoes, for soccer games in the heat and rain, 3-hour long recitals for 3 minutes of dancing, Grandparents Days at school and graduations from pre-school AND Kindergarten...and so many more. Thank you for cool nick-names like Ella-Yella, Jimmy and "the stickys." Thank you for our first trip to Disney to meet every single princess--God bless you for that one! And thank you for camping... a lot of camper fun, with a lot of us in your space. Thank you for agreeing to everything fun because you loved us all so much, to create a great memory and likely, a really cool picture.
Thank you for your sacrifices. For giving your first days of "retirement" to the care-giving of Ella and Sarah Maddie--new twin babies starting their lives, and you gave the most incredible act of love and kindness--for this, thank you is truly not enough. You could have been sailing on Lake George but yet chose to journey back into time with diapers, bottles, endless crying (or so it seemed) and with not 1 but 2 granddaughters. Michael, I have never been so grateful....and I had planned to thank you, just one more time.
Thank you for always reminding me that family is first and that over 50 years of marriage is totally possible...and still be so in love that you hold hands and would not sleep apart ---so much in love that even the drycleaner still asks about you every time I'm in the building--she remembers how sweet and attentive you are to your life long love.
Thank you for being an amazing father and grandfather. Thank you for your presence in our lives. We will forever remember you in every moment we spend together--and in that beautiful smile that you've passed to Tommy. I have been so blessed to have the last 22 years of your love and while we all have our plans, God needed you now. Thank you for all the Living you've done, Rest in Peace Grandpa. I love you.
