Obituary of Manharlal Naginlal Kayastha, M.D.

Manhar N. Kayastha, MD, 89 of Hurley, NY was taken into the arms of the Lord on Saturday, January 7, 2023 at Saratoga Hospital in Saratoga Springs, NY, following a long illness. Receiving the best care there, he passed peacefully in the presence of his family.

Born on September 17, 1933 in Ahmedabad, Gujarat State, India to Naginlal and Jasodaben Kayastha, he was the eldest of 9 children. Being ill and bedridden, Manne, as he is known to his family and friends achieved his medical degree in India at Baroda University at only 25 to help others. He arrived in the United States to begin this journey. The journey almost ended while traversing Pikes Pike, Colorado in dangerous conditions and accidentally saved himself with flailing elbow that luckily hit the steering column shifter. His memory of a police officer giving a young Indian doctor money after he lost his wallet got Manne a hotel room and hot meal resonated with him and he unknowingly repaid that throughout his life as he never forgot it. He was a true family doctor of his time, joyously delivering babies, working as a pathologist, and performing minor surgeries. His knowledge of medicine was matched only by his compassion for his patients resulting in a long commitment to the community until retirement.

A loving father and a devoted husband to the love of his life Josephine (Jessome) Kayastha. His smile and laughter ran throughout a loving home filled with family. Whether trying to give his beautiful wife a kiss while being accosted by her Pomeranians or indulging (and encouraging) the children running in circles causing chaos. His pride in his family was on display daily. 

Manne is survived his son Rabin and daughter Anita, his brother Mahesh (Tom) Tamakuwala, his sister Usha Kayastha and his many nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to Hindu funeral services which will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday morning, January 11, 2023 at the Gardner Earl Memorial Chapel and Crematorium on the grounds of Oakwood Cemetery, 186 Oakwood Ave, Troy, NY 12182.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted by the family to the Gordon C. Emerick Funeral Home, 1550 RT-9, Clifton Park, NY  12065.
